What is Particle Size Analysis?

Particle size analysis is used when size really does matter, at scales of nanometers to millimeters. Products' performance, stability, texture and appearance can be affected by the size of particles on a surface or in a material. Whether a pharmaceutical company is concerned with dissolution rates and bioavailability, a battery manufacturer is interested in slurry flow and energy density, or find yourself in any other situation where getting the size just right is of critical importance, Covalent can help.

Capabilities and Applications

Whether you're formulating a new drug or optimizing a battery slurry, precise particle data is essential. With more than 20M in instrumentation in at the Covalent lab and the ability to perform myriad forms of particle size analysis, we support teams across:

  • Pharmaceuticals and Biotech (formulation, stability) .
  • Advanced Materials and Nanomaterials .
  • Battery and Energy Materials .
  • Semiconductors and CMP Slurries.
  • Food and Beverage.
  • Cosmetics and Personal Care.
  • Paints, Inks, and Pigments.

Strengths

Delivers precise, objective and measurable data on particle size distribution.
Analysis sensitivity ranges from nanometers to millimeters.
Ideal when solubility, texture, stability and flow are primary concerns.

Limitations

Many methods assume spherical particles, which isn't always the case.
Improper handling of samples before testing can affect accuracy.
May need additional tests - size alone doesn't describe shape, surface area or porosity.

Common Techniques Used in Particle Size Analysis

Different materials and use cases call for different tools. Our metrology lab offers a wide range of particle analysis techniques tailored to your application.

  • Laser Diffraction - ideal for powders, suspensions and emulsions measuring particle size distribution between 100 nm–3 mm.
  • Dynamic Light Scattering (DLS) - for nanoparticles, colloids or proteins where submicron particle sizing (1 nm–1 µm) is necessary.
  • Zeta Potential Analysis - while not technically used for size analysis, Zeta Potential Analysis is often used in conjunction with sizing analysis, measuring surface charge to fully understand your material.
